In this short tutorial, I am going to show you how to get you started with TypeScript in vscode in watch mode so it will automatically compile on save with TSLint as well.

Presequence

npm install -g typescript

TSLint

Download Code

In your working directory make a .vscode folder if you don’t have already and in it make those two files.

launch.json

{
    "version": "0.2.0",
    "configurations": [
        {
            "type": "node",
            "request": "launch",
            "name": "Launch Program",
            "program": "${workspaceFolder}/main.ts",
            "outFiles": [
                "${workspaceFolder}/**/*.js"
            ]
        }
    ]
}

tasks.json

{
    "version": "2.0.0",
    "tasks": [
        {
            "type": "typescript",
            "tsconfig": "tsconfig.json",
            "option": "watch",
            "problemMatcher": [
                "$tsc-watch"
            ]
        }
    ]
}

Now directly in your working directory, you need have 2 more files with their appropriate settings.

tslint.json (tslint only settings)

{
    "defaultSeverity": "error",
    "extends": [
        "tslint:recommended"
    ],
    "jsRules": {},
    "rules": {
      "ter-indent": [true, 2],
      "quotemark": [true, "single"],
      "no-console": false,
      "member-access": false,
      "max-classes-per-file": false,
      "no-consecutive-blank-lines": false,
      "max-line-length": false,
      "arrow-parens": false,
      "no-shadowed-variable": false,
      "no-angle-bracket-type-assertion": false
    },
    "rulesDirectory": []
}

tsconfig.json (typescript related)

Now click CTRL+T type >task select Tasks:Run Task then again select tsc:watchtsconfig.json, that way all your ts files will be compiled to js automatically and you would be able to debug and se the result in debug console window of the terminal.

Also don’t forget to make a main.ts file in the same workspace folder as the above, where lies your starting file for your scripts. Then run them in debug mode with F5.
